Summer is a time for relaxing in the sun near a beautiful body of water, not for working. At least that is what we are conditioned to think as children. However, life as an adult is very different, with most of us finding ourselves in a cold and austere office working throughout the summer. This causes many offices to be hit by lower productivity during the summer.
According to a recent study, workplace productivity is estimated to drop 20 percent during the summer. This is due to several factors. One is the 19 percent decrease in attendance during the summer. This results in many projects taking 13 percent longer to complete. The study also revealed that 45 percent of workers are far more distracted during the summer than the rest of the year. Longer and warmer summer days promote daydreaming, especially of being outdoors. Higher temperatures and humidity can make it too hot to fully concentrate. Summer is also the time when many people take vacations. With some staff members taking time off to relax, the office can feel empty and desolate.
We’ve gathered some tips for you
So how do you combat this decrease in productivity and motivation? Here are a few suggestions for helping your workers be more productive and motivated during the summer:
Relax the Dress Code – If possible, relax your dress code policy during the summer. Business casual will help your employees feel more comfortable while enduring the heat of summer.
A reminder of Goals – You may need to give your employees a reminder about the goals the company has set as well as establish smaller goals for the summer months specifically. Be sure to have regular checkups with the team to ensure everyone is accomplishing what needs to be accomplished.
Be Organized – Be sure to gather all vacation information from employees so you can ensure you stagger time off so there is always a steady number of people to work throughout the entire summer. Be sure to share schedules with those that may be impacted by the reduced staffing.
Be Prepared – Before summer hits and people leave for vacation, know what needs to happen before and during absences.
